When I tell friends about the issue of child identity theft their typical reaction is “I had no idea!” Unfortunately, this problem has been around for years but is getting significantly worse because of the 250+ million electronic medical records that have been stolen from the thousands of data breaches over the past 3 years, which have included tens of millions of children’s identities.

There is an article in the Detroit Free Press that highlights this problem and says that 1.3 million kids identities are stolen annually, 50% are under the age of 6-years-old. It says scammers will hunt through cemeteries for children’s graves in an effort to find leads for old or dormant social security numbers to create a fake identity.
